2020-21 Favorites!

JessComment

Thanks for stopping by—I’m so glad you’re here! 😁

I haven’t done a yearly favorites post since 2019, which I guess makes sense given the complete dumpster fire the world has been since then!

I actually hope to do more Favorites posts in 2022 because I really enjoy sharing/talking about things that I use all the time—and reading about other people’s favorites things!

Some links below are affiliate links, which means I make a small commission (at no cost to you) if you click through!

GLDN Annie hoops

The Annie hoops are actually my third pair of earrings from GLDN! My ears are pretty sensitive and temperamental, but GLDN earrings miraculously don’t bother them—and they’re also pretty inexpensive. (Especially because I end up wearing each pair for like a year straight!) I wanted to try out the small hoops trend, but I’m really a studs girl, so the Annie Hoops (which wear like studs) are the perfect compromise. Love that the square shape is a little bit different too.

Nintendo Switch + Breath of the Wild

These may be my favorite favorites of 2020-21. (Hello, I am an actual child. 😂) It took some time to track down a Switch during the pandemic (stalking it at Target eventually paid off!), but it’s been well worth it. I love that it has a handheld mode, so I can escape to Midgar or Hyrule when Pops is watching HGTV! 😂

My bffl gave me Breath of the Wild last Christmas, and this game, oh man. It’s brought me back to the joy and wonder I experienced with Ocarina of Time back in the day. I’ve always been an “explore every inch of the map and talk to every townsperson” type of gamer, so an open-world Zelda is perfect for me. BotW Hyrule is a total post-apocalyptic nightmare, and yet it has been such a nice escape from the actual nightmare we’re all living in! 😂😬

Unintentional twinning on Christmas morning! Also, hello to Cat in a Fish Airplane! #iykyk

Purple back pillow

In 2020, I started having horrible lower back pain towards the end of every work day. I actually WFH with the same chair I had in the office, so I don’t know what went awry, but yikes. I tried a few Amazon back supports, but they always felt too big, like they were pushing me out of my chair. Enter this very flat lumbar support by Purple, which has been a dream come true. I very rarely have that back pain anymore! It has been worth every penny.

Amazon Table

I do have a desktop computer and table (basically my set-up from the office) for WFH, but this little table has been great for my laptop—and writing in general. The only annoying thing is that the height at its shortest setting is just a smidge too tall for me. (I’m 5’4”.) But I really like that its “feet” slide under your chair or couch, meaning you can really pull the table in close, rather than hunching over it. Bonus that we are the house of no tables (like, no end tables or coffee tables), so this guy serves many purposes, haha.

Biossance Lip Balm and Glossier Balm Dot Com in Cookie Butter

Buying lip gloss may be one of my coping skills, but honestly, a lot of my finds end up being pretty meh. These two, though—chef’s kiss. They are both kind of thick and not at all sticky, so they’re the two I’ve kept going back to. I really appreciate that the Biossance one is fragrance-free, but when you need a wonderful cookie scent in your life, enter the Balm Dot Com in Cookie Butter. And they’re both sheer (the Biossance one is basically clear) and soak into your lips nicely, so they’re perfect for wearing under a mask! (There is still a mask mandate in my heart.)

Panasonic Lumix camera

My biggest splurge of 2020-21. I’m still learning how to use it, but it takes great pictures and videos even with my cluelessness! I still have my DSLR, but I started having trouble bringing that into places like the Wells Fargo Center (apparently, average folk can’t bring in cameras with changeable lenses anymore??), which piqued my interest in a smaller option. And no one has minded this little Lumix camera! Not only have I had no problem bringing it into baseball games for way-better-than-iPhone-pics, it also takes great flower pics! WIN-WIN.

Pro tip from my years of following sports: you will only take beautiful pictures when you’re not really trying. 😂 Helloooo Nick Maton!

A DREAM. 💜💖

Justin Bieber?!

I’ve never been super into Justin Bieber, though I have enjoyed a lot of his songs over the years. Well, this past year, I stumbled on the Justice and Changes albums, and LOVE. I know they’re not new new, but Pops can only do so much to make me hip. (He is, in fact, the one who introduced me to “Hold On” and “Peaches.” 😂) I love the dreamy, hypnotic beats of Changes. Like, yeah, “Yummy” is so dumb, but that beat, oh man—I try to resist and then I’m all “50-50 love the way you split it, light a match get litty, babe.” My real jam, though, is “Habitual”—the demo version by Poo Bear in Seasons (the YouTube show about the making of Changes—yes, send help) absolutely sucked me in. I am apparently all for haunting celestial vibes. And then there’s the Justice album, which is basically all of my therapy issues set to catchy melodies. (“Deserve You”?! “Unstable”?!) Shout out to JB for making me feel less alone this year! Talk about a whole new perspective for liiiife.

Moon Pal and Pillow Slides

Yes, IG made me buy them. I am not proud to have succumbed to the targeted ads life, but I must say, I do use both of these alllll the time!

First up, “I am an actual child” Part Two. I love me a weighted item (I also have weighted blankets, weighted eye masks, etc.), so a Moon Pal is not really a stretch. I guess I just really like physical weight to accompany the emotional weight of anxiety?? 😂🤷🏼‍♀️ I keep the Moon Pal downstairs and put it on my lap/chest when watching TV, and it really is quite soothing! It also makes for a great Switch rest when I’m playing BotW!

Kimberley Sustad cannot believe it!

As for the Pillow Slides, it’s not so much that I’m wild about them, it’s just that they’ve replaced my old flip-flops/slippers and thus are something I do wear around the house every day. (Though I did wear them out a few times in the summer, and they were quite all right for that too!)

Not to mention that they are a great accessory for cat snuggles! PUDGE APPROVED.

Friday Favorites: Christmas 2021

JessComment

Thanks for stopping by—I’m so glad you’re here! 😁

How the heck is it already New Year’s Eve?! Not that I’m sad to see 2021 go, but I still can’t believe Christmas is already over! I hope you had a wonderful, maybe even restorative (!!) holiday. We laid low for the most part (thanks, omicron), but here are some highlights:

(FYI: I make a small commission for purchases or clicks made through links in this post.)

BEHOLD this amazing shirt Timmi got me!! As an English major, I’ve had some Out of Print shirts in my day, but I had no idea they made a BSC one!! This is almost as exciting as when I got the Claudia doll for Christmas 1994!! 😂

Because of my omicron anxiety, Timmi and I ended up doing a porch gift exchange, which meant that I was literally standing on my porch in the freezing cold, shrieking, “IT’S KRISTY’S GREAT IDEA!!!!” That must be a first for our neighborhood, haha. At first, I thought it was just a shirt with the BSC logo, but then I recognized the original cover art from the first book—hence the shrieking. 😂

Amazing gift #2, courtesy of my bffl, Soph! Soph frequents a store near her that we call The Cool Girl Store because everything from it makes us feel like we’re remotely cool. 😂 And this amazing jumpsuit is one such item! It’s so soft and comfy. I want to live in it!

Soph has the same jumpsuit and suggested pairing it with an oversized sweater, and when Pops saw this outfit, he assumed it all came from The Cool Girl Store. No, in fact, the cardigan is from the pajama section of Target! 😂 (I’ve heard that it’s a Barefoot Dreams dupe, but I don’t have any of those, so I have no clue. All I know is that it’s super soft and fluffy! Basically a wearable blanket 10/10)

I don’t know about you, but we really got sucked into the Hallmark Christmas movie vortex in this house. Obviously, a Hallmark movie starring cats is a winner in my book! 😂 Pops’ votes go to The Christmas House 2 and Christmas by Starlight, which I also enjoyed. The 2020-21 Hallmark movies seem to have more humor and less predictability than earlier fare, which I appreciate!

Lastly, on a completely different note… Do you ever think back to past Christmases and feel so SO grateful that you are not that person or in that situation anymore? Christmas 2010 has been on my mind lately—it was a rough one in the thick of grad school. Now that I’m almost 10 years removed from finishing my Master’s, I feel such empathy for my younger self and am so glad that school no longer dictates my self-worth and general emotional state. I’m also really glad to have the help of therapy and mental health meds these days! ❤️❤️

Thanks again for stopping by, and Happy New Year! xoxo

Friday Favorites: Working in a Winter Wonderland

JessComment

My dream of working (from home) in a winter wonderland has finally come true! While we still haven’t decorated our tree yet, I took matters into my own hands and put up most of the other decorations last weekend! 😁

Some links below are affiliate links, which means I make a small commission (at no cost to you) if you click through!

I am in love with these vintage-y Mr. Christmas mini ceramic trees. They are actually the main decoration I was looking for when we first broke out the Christmas boxes. They’re so just cute, fun, and cheerful! My mom gave me the green one a few years ago, and then I added the pink (below) and white ones when I wanted to work in a winter wonderland last year. I randomly found them at Saks Off Fifth last year, but you can apparently get a set of three pink ones from Target online! 💖

Of course my “sparkly crystal dream” shelf gets one of the pink Mr. Christmas trees! And, naturally, this cute donut ornament, which had to be paired with Timmi, in honor of our many donut crawls in Chicago!

This girl is a whole chill, cozy, Christmas vibe, and I am for sure going to be embodying her when I’m off at the end of the month! She’s actually a card that I framed and put near my work desk. I’m kind of obsessed with this artist, All the Ways to Say, ever since randomly finding one of her cards down the shore last summer!

It is impossible to get a decent pic of this with all the shadows and glare. ☹️

Here is a glimpse into my very nerdy soul. 😂 I tucked Christmas Vibe Girl in on the “inner child” shelf (next to my “sparkly crystal dream” shelf), even though she (and Alexis Rose, god love her) aren’t quite on theme. Zelda and Sheik amiibo, a Minnie Mouse cupcake from Disneyland, and Selphie (who actually was a Christmas present… in 1999)—what’s not to love?

How cute is this random Fringe Studio mug from Nordstrom Rack? Just throw in some mini Ikea ornaments from, roughly, 2009, and happy holliyays indeed!

Obviously, love a bottle brush tree. And tinsel tree, and a glass tree. The bottle brush and glass trees are from Occasionette, an adorable boutique in Philly, and I think the tinsel tree came from my favorite place to get decorations—the Target $1 Spot! Gotta love the box of masks and giant Purell in the background too. #priorities

There’s a good chance this garland is older than me! And we were reminded of that when Pops tried to reposition one of the bows and the whole thing fell apart. 😬😂

What are your treasured Christmas decorations? Happy Friday! xoxo

Friday Favorites: Holiday finds!

JessComment

I don’t know about you, but the craziness of 2020 and 2021 has made me really embrace the holiday season. Give me all the cozy things, cute decorations, yummy scents, warm drinks, and cheery lights! I was pretty much ready to decorate for Christmas on November 1, and while that did not happen (😂), I have been stocking up on all things holiday. (I love walking around stores and looking at all the holiday displays—anyone else?) Here are a few of my fave finds!

Most links below are affiliate links, which means I make a small commission (at no cost to you) if you click through!

CHRISTMAS COFFEE SHIRT

I love a fun Christmas coffee drink—in fact, I’ve probably had Starbucks more in the past few weeks than I have all year! So I couldn’t resist this shirt from Emma and Anna Apparel on Etsy! I may not have started decorating on November 1, but I did indeed wear this shirt, and that counts for something, right? 🎄

ILUME BOULANGERIE CANDLE IN ESPRESSO

Speaking of coffee, I’m always on the quest for a good coffee candle that’s the right mix of sweet and burnt (😂), and this one that I randomly found at Anthropologie does it for me! Even Pops likes it, and he is pretty anti-candle. (He refers to them as “contraband” because he knows I burn them when he’s not home!)

OLD NAVY CHRISTMAS PAJAMAS

Old Navy has SO MANY good holiday pj options right now! I stopped in on Tuesday and ended up getting two pairs of pj pants, only to find out later that one is actually “men’s.” (I should have been suspicious when it had pockets!) Don’t be deterred, though—my usual size fit me fine, I only discovered it was men’s when I couldn’t find it on their site for this post! Anyway, I got both the Men’s Printed Flannel Pajama Pants in a tree farm motif (“Express YourELF”) and the Matching Printed Flannel Jogger Pajama Pants for Women in a kind of fair isle-y pattern (“Blue Trees”). Annnnd I picked up this Christmas coffee tee (or is it hot chocolate?) because apparently you can’t have enough of those! 😂 Pjs were 50% off on Tuesday, and that may well be higher now that it’s Black Friday!

NATIVE’S SUGAR COOKIE BODY WASH

I had never tried anything from Native before, but when I saw this at Target a few weeks ago, I was intrigued—and knew I had to pounce because limited edition stuff seems to just vanish instantaneously. (Indeed, the Target website now lists it as sold out everywhere near me, so fingers crossed that you have better luck if you’re interested!) Cookie scents can easily be too fake or nauseating, but I think this one smells delish and pretty true to a sugar cookie. And the scent doesn’t last that long, which is actually a plus in my book. (That’s why there’s nothing from Bath and Body Works on this list, haha. Strong scents give me a headache after awhile.)

GLOSSIER BALM DOT COM IN COOKIE BUTTER

This one is also limited edition, but it appears to still be available online! Like other Balm Dot Coms, the formula of this is just lovely—not too thick, not too thin, and not sticky. There’s not much color payoff either, but that’s fine with me (we all know I love a bold lip 😂), and the cookie butter scent is delightful. Actually, now that I think about it, I don’t believe I’ve ever had Trader Joe’s famous Cookie Butter before. That obviously needs to change! Nom nom for us, David!

What are your favorite holiday finds this year? Happy Black Friday! xo

Friday Favorites: Fall flowers + foliage

JessComment

This year, I decided to take my flower creeping to the next level and get a membership to the local botanical garden. I got the cheapest option, so it’s already paid for itself, and I got two free passes for friends (aka Pops)! 10/10 would recommend!

Back in early October, Kristin’s fam came to visit, and Pops and I met up with them there! They don’t live in PA, and it was so good to see them.

At that time, the Flower Walk was a gorgeous array of yellows, oranges, and reds. The leaves hadn’t started changing color yet, but fall was definitely the aesthetic, and I was living for it. I plopped myself among the flowers for some pics, as I had done in the spring (see blog sidebar photo LOL), but this time, it worked out even better because Kristin’s bf is a legit photographer! As he took the pic below, he was like, “I hope this makes the blog!” As Kristin would say, UH DOYYY! 😂😂

In case you didn’t know it was fall 😂:

There were a few dahlias scattered about, but for some reason, they were in areas you couldn’t really access. Wah! This was the only one I could get that close to!

Last weekend, I went back by myself, hoping to see the fall Flower Walk now accompanied by some autumnal trees. Unfortunately, this was not to be—it seems they jumped straight from fall to Christmas prep, and the Flower Walk and Idea Garden were totally desolate! (There was some sort of mum festival going on in the conservatory, but I go to botanical gardens in covid times for an outdoor experience, you know? Plus, how many mums do you really need in your life??)

Aside from some roses holding on for dear life, these were the only flowers I saw:

Pretty aesthetically pleasing, I must say.

There wasn’t a ton of foliage either, but there were these leaves at least…

…and this tree…

…complete with squawking geese….

THE AUDACITY!!

I was pretty bummed about the lack of flowers, but then I found this array tucked off in a secluded corner!!

Pink, purple, and yellow?! What’s not to love?

When I asked Kristin’s mom what this awesome cotton candy grass thing is, she guessed Muhly grass, which I’d never heard of, but seems correct and looks really freaking cool!

How are you enjoying the fall? Happy Friday! xo
